In a pretty remarkable upset, Japanese flyweight star Kenshiro Teraji (25-1) fought a hard battle in his native country, but ultimately lost his WBC world title against the dangerous Ricardo Sandoval (26-2) in Yokohama, Japan.
Sandoval realized the childhood dream to become flyweight champion of the world. Paying respects to the US and Mexican flag, Sandoval is also blessed with the same tutelage as Alexis Rocha, Santa Ana, California’s great hope at welterweight. Their shared coach is Hector Valdez, a native of Santa Ana, California.
After being dropped in the early rounds, Sandoval pressured and nullified Teraji’s usually dominant jab. Sandoval weathered the early storm and was countering Teraji very well, at times, even stunning the Japanese boxer. Ultimately, the competitive bout turned into a decision victory for Sandoval, with little controversy despite that initial show of power from Japan’s best flyweight.
